This beautiful series visits some of the most extraordinary gardens of all time; man-made marvels that have gone on to influence the world including, Mainau, Leiden Botanic Garden, Parque de Monserrate and Trsteno.

To get to know each garden, master interviews with dynamic experts will trace its history; examining the culture and politics of the time that forged it and the people who built it, from single, green-fingered visionaries to dynasties or princes and even poets. In each country, the series will also reveal what gardens themselves mean culturally and how this is reflected in the central gardens.

From Germany’s Mainau with its island of flowers and famous flower sculptures, to Leiden Botanic Garden in The Netherlands with its stunning tulips and revolutionary gardening technology; from Parque de Monserrate in the heart of Portugal with it’s exotic plant collection and 1000-year old watering system, to the Renaissance Gardens of Croatia’s Trsteno which have been used in Game of Thrones as well as being home to some of Europe's largest trees, these four gardens have influenced other gardens in their home country and around the globe.

The series will visit and use archive to show other gardens that have in turn emulated and imitated these gardens’ unique styles.

Gardens transcend boundaries, influencing people and culture throughout history as travellers brought ideas home to become part of our everyday lives.
