Iconic Africa, art and an elusive elephant..... we follow British wildlife artist, Jonathan Truss on a quest to find his ultimate artistic inspiration and create a portrait of a famous big tusker elephant called Tim. Our artist has been set this challenge by none other than Virginia McKenna OBE, the star of the film Born Free and co founder of the charity that shares it’s name.

This wonderful film follows Jonathan as he journeys deep into Amboseli National Park, Kenya in search of the elusive tusker; even the rangers in this massive park rarely get a glimpse of Tim.

Jonathan’s mission is to create a magnificent painting of this world famous, but rarely seen elephant.. The documentary follows him as he journeys deep into Amboseli National Park, Kenya in search of the elusive tusker; even the rangers in this massive park rarely get a glimpse of Tim. In his search for the perfect portrait, Jonathan comes face-to-face with numerous African animals all with the iconic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. For an artist like Jonathan it’s a dream come true, painting animals in the wild where they belong and not from photographs. He makes sketches and trials different ideas but it’s Tim he ultimately wants to track down.

In this heart-warming travelogue Jonathan also highlights the work being done to try and protect endangered elephants like Tim. He joins an anti-poaching dog unit on a training exercise where he becomes the poacher, learns about a new predator protection scheme and also gives an art lesson to a local school.

Born Free founder, Virginia McKenna OBE adds to the narrative with talking head segments intercut throughout.

Jonathan is close to giving up his search and reluctantly heads back to Nairobi when in the final hour, he receives news that Tim has been spotted by the ranger team. In a climatic scene we see Jonathan fulfil his dream to study the gigantic elephant up close. Remarkably Tim is joined by a second big tusker, it’s a truly once in a lifetime encounter.

Back home in the studio we see Jonathan transfer his sketches onto canvas, in the form of a beautiful painting of the two elephants. The film closes with a Born Free charity auction and after much suspense the painting sells for £10,000, every penny of which will go back to protecting elephants like Tim.
